Fossil Free Festivals

Festivals and cultural institutions across the world are going fossil free as part of a broad movement for climate justice.

In 2016, the Edinburgh International Festival and the Tate in London dropped BP sponsorship following pressure from staff, Trustees and campaigners.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Mauritshuis museum in the Hague dropped Shell as a sponsor in 2018 after local campaign groups highlighted the toxic influence of the fossil fuel industry.

This is a growing movement. Over 100 organisations have now signed the ‘Oil Sponsorship Free’ pledge which states that:

‘We do not take any oil, coal, or gas corporate sponsorship for our cultural work. We call on our peers and institutional partners to refuse fossil fuel funding too.’

We call on the Edinburgh International Science Festival and other Scottish educational and scientific institutions to do likewise.

We look forward to Edinburgh Science setting a positive example moving forward, and joining organisations such as The Tate, The Van Gogh Museum, and Edinburgh International Festival in creating sustainable future, based on sound science, for all.
